The 4th Cybersecurity for Energy & Utilities Conference, held on September 6-7, 2023, at the Sheraton Hotel in Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was a resounding success. This conference addressed critical cybersecurity issues facing the energy and utilities industry, particularly in the GCC region, where this sector is a prime target for cyberattacks, accounting for about 50% of such incidents.

The event provided a platform for cybersecurity experts, government officials, and industry professionals to come together and discuss the latest developments and strategies in safeguarding critical infrastructure. Participants had the opportunity to delve into the evolving cyber threats and explore innovative solutions to mitigate these risks.

    Chief Information Security Officer, Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) - Kuwait

    Husain Al-Bustan is the Information Security Team Leader at Kuwait National Petroleum Company, where he worked for over 30 years, and is responsible for the organization’s Cybersecurity strategies, initiatives and operations for both, IT and OT. He currently heads KNPC’s Cybersecurity Board and is a member of several cross-functional Cybersecurity committees at a company, country and GCC level. Husain received his BSc and MSc in Computer Engineering from Boston University in 1989 and 1991 respectively and holds the following certifications: C|CISO, PMP, CMRP, MCSE, CNE, MCP+

    Professor Mohammad Hammoudeh

    SMIEEE, MCIIS, Saudi Aramco Cybersecurity Chair Professor, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) - Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

    Mohammad is the Saudi Aramco Cybersecurity Chair Professor at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM). Prior to joining KFUPM, Mohammad was the head of the CfACS IoT and Cyber Security Lab he founded in 2016 at the Manchester Metropolitan University. Mohammad is the founder and co-Editor in Cheif of ACM’s journal of Distributed Ledger Technology: Research & Practice. His research interests are centred around the applications of zero trust security to Internet-connected critical national infrastructures.   He co-developed a state-of-the-art unprivileged and trustless computing zero trust security theory. Working with a global collaborative research network spanning the academic community, industry, policymakers and wider technology stakeholders, Mohammad published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, and over 100 refereed conference papers. Mohammad advised the UK’s Government on law reform related to national cybersecurity through a number of committees and hearings.  He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK. 

    Sithembile Songo

    Chief Information Security Officer, Eskom – South Africa

    Sithembile has been specializing in information security for almost two decades, with leadership positions in various industries such as finance, telecommunications, public sector, consulting, utilities, and state-owned entities. She holds a Master of Science degree in Information Security and possesses multiple professional certifications in cybersecurity. Her main passion is helping organizations achieve their business objectives securely, and she has extensive experience in developing and implementing effective information security strategies. She currently leads the Information Security department at Eskom, a state-owned entity responsible for generating 95% of South Africa’s electricity, and oversaw the connection of 163,613 households to the electricity grid in the 2020 financial year.

    Greg Sisson

    Former United State Department of Energy Chief Information Security Officer - United States

    Greg is an Executive Director in the EY Power and Utilities Cybersecurity Consulting practice and has been with the firm since July 2022. He is a seasoned executive-level leader with extensive experience developing, implementing, and leading cybersecurity initiatives, programs, and operations in positions of increasing scope and responsibility at the department level for the United States Departments of Energy and Defense.

    Prior to joining EY in July of 2022, he served in the US Department of Energy as the Chief Information Security Officer where he was responsible for Department wide cybersecurity operations, risk management and compliance enabling the Departments support to energy, environmental management, transformative science and nuclear security mission areas.

    Prior to DOE, he served as the Chief of Staff and the Deputy Director of Operations in Joint Force Headquarters Department of Defense (DOD) Information Network (JFHQ-DODIN). JFHQ-DODIN is the component of United States Cyber Command responsible for directing and managing DOD defensive cyberspace operations globally.

    Before JFHQ-DODIN, he served in several roles at United States Joint Forces Command and the Joint Staff, training military organizations as they prepared for combat operations in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

    Greg served over 20 years as a non-commissioned and commissioned officer in the United States Army where he led diverse organizations at multiple echelons. He retired as a Signal Officer in 2004.

    Greg completed his undergraduate work at the University of South Carolina Aiken where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and, in 2014 he earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the College of Naval Warfare in Newport, RI.

    Dr Abdullah A.I. Alnajem

    Nuclear Cybersecurity Consultant - Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

    Dr. Abdullah A.I. Alnajem is an accomplished professional specializing in nuclear cybersecurity, computer science, and finance. He holds licenses as a Nuclear Cybersecurity Professional granted by the World Institute for Nuclear Security in Vienna, Austria, and as a consultant in Computers, IT & Communications awarded by the Saudi Ministry of Commerce & Investment.

    With educational background from George Mason University in the USA and The University of Manchester in the UK, Dr. Alnajem graduated in Finance & Accounting and Computer Science. He further earned an MSc and a PhD from The University of Manchester, specializing in Cyber Risk & Cybersecurity.

    Throughout his career, Dr. Alnajem has gained valuable experience at organizations such as KPMG, Riyad Bank, Alhamrani Universal Company, and currently serves as a Chief Cybersecurity Officer in the insurance sector. He has also had virtual internships with JPMorgan Chase & Co. and General Electric. 

    In 2019, Dr. Alnajem’s innovative work earned him a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO.GOV) for his invention, which has received international recognition and been referenced by major banks and security firms such as Bank of America, PayPal, Robert Bosch, and Palo Alto Networks.

    Dr. Abdullah A.I. Alnajem’s impressive qualifications, experience, and contributions in cybersecurity showcase his expertise and reputation in the field.

    Arsalan Yousuf

    Director - Resilience and Crisis Management Lead, Deloitte & Touche Advisory Saudi Limited - Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

    Arsalan is the Director – Resilience & Crisis Management in Deloitte’s Cyber Risk practice based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. With an overall experience of 17+ years, he has in-depth knowledge & experience in the field of Crisis Management, Resiliency, and Business Continuity, working with several different industry sectors for the development and implementation of BCMS based on ISO 22301 and other regional and local regulations, establishing crisis management and communication capabilities, as well as delivering complex simulations based on real-world scenarios, etc.

    Arsalan has a master’s in computer science from ‘The National University of Computers and Emerging Sciences’ in Pakistan (graduation in June 2008), along with certifications like CBCI, ISO 22301 Lead Implementer, ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, ISO 27005 Lead Risk Manager, Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA).
